DIY Carpenter Bee Traps: Effective Solutions and How to Get Them

Carpenter bees can be a real nuisance for homeowners, especially as they start to become active in the spring. These bees are known for boring into wood to make their nests, which can cause significant damage over time. One effective solution to manage these pests is using carpenter bee traps. Lawn Harmony Landscaping LLC offers an easy DIY guide for making your own traps using basic materials like 4x4 wood and a mason jar. Plus, for those who prefer a ready-made option, we sell these traps for just $8 each or 3 for $20!

Understanding Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees resemble bumblebees but have smooth, shiny abdomens. Unlike bumblebees, carpenter bees are solitary creatures. The females bore holes into wood to lay their eggs, which can lead to structural damage. These bees are particularly fond of untreated or weathered wood, often found in decks, sheds, and other outdoor structures.

DIY Carpenter Bee Trap: A Step-by-Step Guide

Materials Needed:

  • 4x4 wood block (untreated)

  • Plastic mason jar

  • Drill with a 1/2 inch drill bit

  • Small drill bits for pilot holes

  • Metal wire or sturdy string for hanging

  • Wood screws

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Wood Block:

  • Cut the 4x4 wood block to about 6-8 inches in length. This size is manageable and allows for easy placement around your property.

  1. Drill Entrance Holes:

  • Drill 3-4 holes on different sides of the block, slanting slightly upwards. The holes should be about 1/2 inch in diameter and go around 3-4 inches deep but should not go completely through the block.

  1. Attach the Collection Jar:

  • Drill a hole in the center of the bottom of the wood block that leads into the mason jar. The hole should align with the mouth of the jar.

  • Secure the jar to the block. If necessary, use a metal jar lid to make attaching and detaching the jar easier. Drill a hole in the lid, screw the lid to the bottom of the block, and twist the jar into place.

  1. Mounting the Trap:

  • Attach a piece of wire or string to the top of the wood block for hanging.

  • Mount the trap near areas where you’ve seen carpenter bee activity, ideally under eaves or near decks.

How the Trap Works

The design of the trap exploits the carpenter bee’s natural behavior. Bees enter the trap through the angled holes, expecting to find a tunnel. Instead, they descend into the jar, where they become trapped.
